Safety

Every year tens of thousands of lives are lost in transportation related accidents in the U.S. alone.  That number climbs to 1.3 million on a global basis. In addition, between 20-50 million people suffer non-fatal, yet life-changing injuries.   UMTRI’s dedicated faculty and research staff are committed to dramatically reducing fatalities and injuries while improving mobility for all.

Equity

93% percent of the worlds fatalities on the roads occur in low and middle-income countries. In high-income countries like the U.S., people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to be involved in crashes. Social inequity in transportation systems has a disproportionate impact on historically underserved communities, rural communities and their residents.

Efficiency

In the U.S. crashes and congestion create 5.5 billion hours of travel delays and $70 billion in economic costs.  At UMTRI we’re working on solutions that get people, goods and services where they need to be and in an efficient manner. We’re addressing both energy efficiency and personal efficiency and identifying solutions that reduce vehicle miles traveled.
